NLDS Game 2: Cubs 6 – Cardinals 3

Kyle Hendricks and Jamie Garcia were on the mound today for the second game of the NLDS.

The Cardinals got on the board early in the first Matt Carpenter led off the inning with a solo home run.

The Cubs would strike back in the second inning. Starlin Castro lead-off the inning with a single. Austin Jackson hit a ground ball to Jhonny Peralta, he threw to Kolten Wong to get Castro at second, but Wong’s throw was off and went into the dugout. Jackson was awarded second base.

With Miguel Montero at bat, Jackson stole third base. Montero was able to draw a walk. Kyle Hendricks then laid down a safety squeeze and the Cubs were on the board following Garcia’s throwing error. Both Montero and Hendricks were able to advance an extra base. Addison Russell then laid down another safety squeeze to score Montero and give the Cubs a 2-1 lead.

The Cubs weren’t done Dexter Fowler hit an infield single to score Hendricks giving the Cubs a 3-1 lead. Jorge Soler hit a 2 run home run to give the Cubs a 5-1 lead in the second.

Lance Lynn replaced Jamie Garcia in the third and struggled with his command walking Rizzo on 4 pitches. The Cubs continued to play the small game as Castro hit a single to right while Rizzo was running advancing him to third. After a Jackson strikeout, Montero hit a ground ball to second to score Rizzo extending the Cubs lead 6-1.

In the 5th inning, Wong and Randel Grichuk went back-to-back ending Hendricks day. Travis Wood came out and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings.

Trevor Cahill and Hector Rondon were able to t get the final 6 outs.

NEXT: Jake Arrieta vs Michael Wacha on the mound for game 3 Monday.
